The hierarchy of controls in a risk assessment is:
- Eliminate the hazard where possible.
- Substitute for less hazardous material, process or equipment if you cannot eliminate.
- Isolation – separate person from the hazard.
- Engineering – a physical device or process (for example, local exhaust or machine guard).
- Administration – minimise exposure to the risk through use of procedures or training (for example, limit time exposed to hazard).
- PPE – personal protective equipment should be used as the final barrier between the person and the hazard.
