The hierarchy of controls in a risk assessment is:

  1. Eliminate the hazard where possible.
  2. Substitute for less hazardous material, process or equipment if you cannot eliminate.
  3. Isolation – separate person from the hazard.
  4. Engineering – a physical device or process (for example, local exhaust or machine guard).
  5. Administration – minimise exposure to the risk through use of procedures or training (for example, limit time exposed to hazard).
  6. PPE – personal protective equipment should be used as the final barrier between the person and the hazard.
