UQ and RTP Research Scholarships Guideline

Section 1 - Purpose and Objectives

(1) These Guidelines outline applicant eligibility for Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships and UQ Research Training Scholarships.

Section 2 - Definitions, Terms, Acronyms

Section 3 - Guidelines Scope/Coverage

(2) These Guidelines apply to all applicants for a UQ Graduate School scholarship.

Section 4 - Guidelines Statement

(3) The Guidelines are intended to provide assistance to scholarship applicants, and enrolling AOUs when nominating HDR candidates to be included in a competitively awarded scholarship round.

Section 5 - Scholarship Definitions

(4) The Australian Government RTP Scholarship provides a living allowance funded by the Commonwealth of Australia to domestic and international HDR students.

(5) The RTP tuition fee offset provides a tuition fee scholarship funded by the Commonwealth of Australia and the University to domestic and international HDR students.

(6) The value of the Australian Government contribution to the RTP tuition fee offset will be detailed in the offer letter.

(7) The UQRT living allowance stipend provides a living allowance funded by the UQ Graduate School to domestic and international HDR students.

(8) The UQRT living allowance may be co-funded 50% by the UQ Graduate School and the 50% by the enrolling AOU.

(9) The UQRT tuition fee offset provides a tuition fee scholarship funded by the University.

(10) The UQRT tuition fee offset does not provide a tuition fee income for the University.

Section 6 - UQ Graduate School Scholarship Rounds

(11) The Dean of the Graduate School chairs a Scholarship Selection Committee to award UQ Graduate School scholarships, as outlined in section 3 of UQ and RTP Research Scholarships Procedure.

(12) The number of international applicants that can be nominated per AOU in any one scholarship round is capped at 8.

(13) There is no cap for domestic nominees.

Section 7 - Eligibility

(14) To be eligible for a RTP living allowance stipend and/or RTP tuition fee offset, a recipient must be a domestic candidate or an overseas candidate enrolled in an accredited HDR course of study at an Australian higher education provider.

(15) To be eligible for a RTP tuition fee offset, a recipient must not be receiving an equivalent award or scholarship from the Commonwealth designed to offset HDR fees.

Section 8 - Readmission

(16) An applicant who applies for readmission to a prior HDR program at UQ is not eligible to be considered for a UQ Graduate School scholarship.

Section 9 - Remote Status

(17) An applicant who wishes to be enrolled remotely and based outside Australia is not eligible to be considered for a UQ Graduate School scholarship.

(18) A domestic applicant who wishes to be enrolled remotely, i.e. in Australia and not located within daily commuting distance of UQ’s three main campuses (St Lucia, Herston, Gatton), may be considered for a UQ Graduate School scholarship with approval from the Dean, Graduate School.

Section 10 - Joint PhDs and Cotutelle

(19) If UQ is the home (primary) institution, an applicant can be considered for UQ Graduate School scholarship schemes, subject to eligibility.

(20) If UQ is the host (secondary) institution, the applicant should seek funding from their home institution.

Section 11 - Transfer

(21) Any student, domestic or international, who is transferring to UQ must be nominated and considered within a UQ Graduate School scholarship round, even if they hold an the Australian Government RTP Scholarship at their current institution.

(22) If the transfer is occurring after the confirmation milestone, the applicant may only be nominated once. Eligibility is assessed on a case by case basis.

Section 12 - Graduating Students

(23)  Domestic applicants due to graduate from an Australian institution can be considered for a scholarship. A formal letter from the Program Coordinator (or equivalent) advising the final results and stating that the requirements of the degree have been met is to be submitted by the relevant deadline. The letter should include both the grade and Honours classification for Honours students.

(24) If the applicant is successful in securing a scholarship, the results will be verified on the Student Administration system SI-net (UQ students) or via a complete academic transcript (non-UQ students). Where the grades do not match those provided by the Program Coordinator, or equivalent, the scholarship will not be awarded.
