(1) In line with The University of Queensland’s (UQ) mission, vision and values, this Policy expresses UQ’s commitment to: (2) This Policy applies to UQ and its controlled entities, and to members of the UQ Community who work or conduct activities on UQ campuses or use UQ resources and facilities. (3) As a corporate body and landowner, UQ must comply with environmental regulatory requirements primarily under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and the Queensland Environmental Protection Act 1994, their subordinate legislation and local government laws where relevant (the Section 6 Appendix lists all major legislation). (4) UQ is a signatory to the Talloires Declaration, the University Campus Sustainability Declaration and the University Commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which affirms its commitment to fostering an institutional culture for sustainability. (5) To demonstrate its commitment to adopt economic, social and environment responsible, and sustainable practices, UQ will: (6) UQ senior management is responsible for ensuring that UQ and its controlled entities comply with its environmental regulatory obligations. Senior management is also responsible for championing the adoption of sustainable practices across all areas of teaching and learning, research, and operations. Natural environment
refers to all living and non-living things occurring naturally such as trees, land, wildlife and waterways, and protection of natural environment from invasive weeds, pests and human impacts.
Single use plastic free
in this Policy, refers to coffee cups/lids, takeaway containers, food ware (plastic cutlery, cups, plates), plastic straws, plastic bags, single use water bottles, and balloons.
Sustainability
refers to the ability to maintain healthy environmental, social and economic systems in balance, indefinitely, on a global and local scale.
UQ Community
current UQ students, staff (whether or not those staff are covered by the Enterprise Agreement), volunteers, affiliates and anyone else contractually bound to comply with this Policy.
