Section 1 - Purpose and Scope

(1) This Policy outlines the principles and requirements governing admission to The University of Queensland (UQ).

(2) The Policy applies to all applicants seeking admission to a UQ program or non-award study, except:

1. Higher Doctorate and Professional Doctorate applicants (refer to the Higher Doctorates Policy and the Professional Doctorates Policy);
2. Shorter form credentials (refer to the Shorter Form Credentials Policy).

(3) The Policy is supported by the:

1. Undergraduate, Doctor of Medicine, Non-Award and CSP Admissions Procedure; and
2. Higher Degree by Research Admission Procedure.

(4) Admission requirements are outlined in the procedures and are available through the UQ website.

Section 2 - Principles

(5) UQ will conduct its admissions processes based on the following principles:

Transparency and Fairness

(6) The Policy and Procedures will be applied in a consistent, transparent and equitable way.

(7) Clear admission requirements will be provided to assist prospective students to make informed decisions.

(8) Selection criteria will be used for programs or courses which have limited places.

Equity of Access and Selection on Merit

(9) Admission requirements will be set to ensure students have the necessary level of academic capability to succeed in their studies.

(10) Admission requirements include minimum academic achievements, demonstrated English Language Proficiency, and any other university, program or course level requirements.

(11) Meeting minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission.

(12) An offer of admission may only be made to an applicant who has satisfied the admission requirements and any selection criteria.

(13) UQ will establish admission schemes to support applicants with educationally disadvantaged backgrounds to gain admission. Admission schemes will be established in accordance with the procedures, and in these schemes additional or alternative criteria may be considered when assessing an individual’s academic merit and potential for success.

Section 3 - Key Requirements

(14) All students admitted to UQ must comply with all:

1. policies and procedures applicable to students
2. conditions placed on their admission
3. requirements specified for their program; and
4. for international students on a visa, the conditions of their visa.

(15) UQ may refuse or withdraw an offer of admission in accordance with the procedures.

Section 4 - Roles, Responsibilities and Accountabilities

(16) Offers of admission for fee-paying and Commonwealth supported places are approved by the Academic Registrar and administered by Admissions (Domestic) and International Admissions, Schools, and Faculties of UQ.

(17) The detailed roles and responsibilities for admission are listed in the procedures.

(18) The Vice-Chancellor may, under exceptional circumstances, waive strict application of this Policy or authorise manual offers for specific applicants, subject to conditions. Before doing so, the Vice-Chancellor will consult with the Executive Dean, the President of the Academic Board, and the Academic Registrar. 

Section 5 - Monitoring, Review and Assurance

(19) Periodic reviews are initiated by the Academic Registrar to ensure the effectiveness of this Policy, with changes considered by University governance. 

(20) Compliance is overseen by the Academic Registrar and the Academic Board's Committee for Academic Programs Policy, through its Coursework Admission Standards Sub-Committee.
